The short answer

Most range problems, such as burners that won't ignite, ovens that heat unevenly, and error codes, come from a specific part that can be tested and replaced. Viking Appliance Services diagnoses Viking, Wolf and Thermador ranges in Reseda and nearby cities, then explains the fault and your options before any repair begins.

A professional-style range carries much of the cooking load in a busy kitchen. When a burner won't light, the oven won't hold temperature, or the control panel shows a code you don't recognize, cooking gets harder and you want a clear answer. Viking Appliance Services repairs gas, dual-fuel and electric ranges in Reseda and nearby areas such as Tarzana, Encino, Northridge, Van Nuys, Canoga Park and Woodland Hills. We work mostly on Viking ranges, along with Wolf ranges, including those in kitchens built around Sub-Zero refrigeration, and Thermador ranges. We're an independent service company, not affiliated with any of these brands. We find the actual fault, explain it in plain terms, and help you decide whether a repair makes sense.

Issues we fix

These are the range problems homeowners describe most often. Several of them can have more than one cause, so we test before replacing parts.

  • Burners that click but won't ignite, or that keep clicking after the flame is lit
  • Weak, yellow or uneven burner flames, or a burner that won't hold a low simmer
  • Oven that won't heat, heats slowly, or runs hotter or cooler than the set temperature
  • Uneven baking, with one side or rack browning much faster than the other
  • Convection fan that's noisy, slow, or not turning
  • Error codes, a blank display, or controls that don't respond
  • Broiler not lighting or not getting hot
  • Oven door that won't close fully, or a self-clean lock that won't release
  • Griddle or char-grill sections that heat poorly or unevenly
  • Knobs that are loose or hard to turn, or a gas valve that feels stiff

What our technician checks on a professional-style range

On a built-in or pro-style range, a few minutes of careful diagnosis saves a lot of guesswork. For burner problems, the technician checks the burner caps and bases for alignment and debris, inspects the igniters and wiring, and tests the spark module and the switches behind each knob. A stuck or wet spark switch is a common reason a burner keeps clicking after it lights.

For oven problems, we measure the actual cavity temperature against the setting, test the oven igniter or bake and broil elements, check the temperature sensor, and confirm the gas safety valve is opening as it should. On dual-fuel and electronic models, we read any stored fault codes and test the control board and its connections rather than replacing it on suspicion.

We also look at the door gasket and hinges, the convection fan motor, and the cooling fan that protects the electronics. Gas supply and connections are checked for safety. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and contact your gas company before calling us.

How Viking, Wolf and Thermador ranges differ in what tends to fail

Each brand builds its ranges a little differently, so the usual weak points differ too. On Viking ranges, many repairs involve the ignition system: spark modules, igniters and burner switches. Oven igniters on gas models also wear out over time, which shows up as an oven that heats slowly or not at all. Older Viking units can also have worn door hinges and gaskets that let heat escape.

Sub-Zero doesn't make ranges itself, but kitchens with Sub-Zero refrigeration often pair it with Wolf cooking, since the two brands share a parent company. On Wolf dual-fuel ranges, problems often trace back to the electronic oven controls, temperature sensors or convection components. The sealed gas burners are durable, but their spark igniters and switches still need attention eventually.

Thermador ranges use star-shaped burners and a low-simmer feature that cycles the flame on and off. When simmering acts up, the cause is often in the ignition or simmer components, not the burner itself. Like other electronic models, Thermador ovens can also develop control board or sensor faults that show up as error codes.

Repair or replace a high-end range?

For most premium ranges, repair is the practical choice. These units are built with heavy grates, solid burners and sturdy oven cavities, and the parts that fail most often are serviceable components like igniters, switches, sensors and elements. Replacing one of those usually brings the range back to normal operation.

Replacement becomes worth considering when the range has several major faults at once, when needed parts are no longer available for an older model, or when the oven cavity or burner box is badly corroded or damaged. A new range may also mean changes to cabinetry, gas lines or electrical service, which adds work beyond the appliance itself. We'll tell you plainly what we found so you can weigh those factors.

What affects the cost of a range repair

We don't quote over the phone without seeing the range, because the same symptom can have very different causes. The main factors are the specific fault, the parts it needs, and how hard the range is to reach and work on.

A burner switch or igniter is a simpler repair than a control board or gas valve. Part availability matters too, since some components for older models take longer to source. Access also plays a role: a freestanding range is easier to service than one set tightly into custom cabinetry, under a heavy hood, or against stone that has to be protected while the unit is moved. We explain the repair and the cost before starting work.

How a service visit works

When you contact us, we ask for the brand, model if you have it, and what the range is doing. That helps the technician come prepared. At the visit, the technician inspects and tests the range, identifies the fault, and walks you through what needs to be done.

If you approve the repair and the part is on hand, we can often finish during the same visit. If a part needs to be ordered, we schedule a return trip to install it. Before leaving, we test the burners and oven to confirm the range is working correctly.

FAQ

Common questions

Why does my range burner keep clicking after it lights?

Continuous clicking usually points to a spark switch that's stuck, worn or wet from a spill, or to a burner cap that isn't seated correctly. Check that the cap sits flat. If the clicking continues, the switch or spark module likely needs testing.

My oven takes a long time to heat. What causes that?

On gas ovens, a weak oven igniter is a frequent cause, because the gas valve won't open fully until the igniter gets hot enough. On electric and dual-fuel models, a failing element or temperature sensor can produce the same symptom.

Do you repair Sub-Zero ranges?

Sub-Zero makes refrigeration, not ranges. Kitchens with Sub-Zero refrigerators often have Wolf ranges, and we repair those, along with Viking and Thermador ranges.

Can you repair a range that's built into custom cabinetry?

Yes. We take care sliding the range out and protect surrounding cabinets and stone. Tight installations can take more time, which is one factor we explain before work begins.

Is it safe to use my range if a burner won't light?

Don't keep trying to light a burner that won't ignite, and don't light it with a match if gas is flowing without a flame. Turn the knob off. If you smell gas, leave the house and contact your gas company first.

Which areas do you serve?

We serve Reseda and nearby San Fernando Valley communities, including Tarzana, Encino, Northridge, Van Nuys, Canoga Park and Woodland Hills.
